Many web browsers like Google Chrome offer access to plenty of useful extensions which users can download for improving productivity or to access particular materials. The extension is still very much helpful to the users who are using browsers such as Chrome and Edge; however, Microsoft has made a decision to disable it and will stop supporting it starting next year.
As per a support page published for the Verge, Microsoft has stated that the Microsoft 365 extension will become obsolete on January 15, 2024. Beyond this period, there will be no more updates, bugs fixed, and technical assistance. Furthermore, it will also be taken out of Edge and Chrome web store thereby blocking any further uploads.
This extension offered a quick interface linking users to Office apps, personal documents and no need to download the desktop applications. The widget helped users to reach content at a higher speed instead of browsing Microsoft 365’s site. It is worth noticing that this extension was used by over 10 million people using google Chorme and Microsoft Edge browsers, although Microsoft hasn’t indicated any particular reasons to stop supporting it.
With this in mind, Microsoft recommends customers to remove the add-on. Additionally, after being extended, this extension does not get security updates, thereby creating a possible threat to security. Edge users are prompted to visit Office apps via Edge sidebar but Chrome users have to save Microsoft 365 in their bookmarks to be able to reach it easier. Further, Microsoft has made some suggestions like “Office – Enable Copy and Paste” which users can work with in addition to Microsoft 365.
