A village chief told AFP that at least eleven corpses of hikers were already found after a volcano erupted in western part of Indonesia. Mt. Marapai, on the island of Sumantra 2,891 mts high erupts on December, emitting a 3,000 mts high column of ash.
The leader of Padang rescue agency, Abdul Malik said, “We have tracked down 26 of them (missing individuals), thirteen survived and eleven died.”
He said that they had already accounted for 500 people from that mountain by Saturday, plus an estimated 75 more hikers who went up from that mountain on Saturday. He added that twelve of them were still missing and forty-nine had descended, some going to the hospital. According to West Sumatra’s natural resources conservation agency, rescue teams were working through the night for the purpose of bringing mountaineers down to safety.
According to an AFP report by Rudy Rinaldi, head of the West Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Agency, some of the rescued hikers were being treated medically.
“Some were burnt due to its heat and they are now undergoing treatment in hospitals,” he added.
