A mass shooting took place at a community near Los Angeles, California on Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of 10 individuals. The incident occurred during a celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, where a crowd of tens of thousands were in attendance. The Associated Press reported on the tragedy on Sunday evening. Captain Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that several individuals who were injured, some critically, were transported to hospitals for treatment.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced that Homicide detectives were sent to assist the Monterey Park Police Department with an investigation into a shooting that resulted in 10 deaths. The shooting occurred at 10:22 pm, according to Sgt. Bob Boese.
The identity and whereabouts of the shooter, believed to be a male, are currently unknown.
According to reports, a female deputy stated that the shooting was an “isolated incident.”
Monterey Park, which has a population of approximately 60,000 and a significant Asian population, is located approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the downtown area of Los Angeles.
Seung Won Choi, the owner of a seafood barbecue restaurant located across the street from the shooting, told the Los Angeles Times that three people entered his establishment and urged him to lock the door.

Choi also reported that the individuals had informed him that the shooter was armed with a machine gun and had multiple rounds of ammunition. The shooting is believed to have occurred at a dance club. Social media images from the scene show a deserted intersection with a cordoned off area and audible police sirens in the background.
Additional images from the scene depict individuals being transported in ambulances to nearby hospitals and receiving medical treatment on the side of the road. Edwin Chen, a 47-year-old resident of Woodland Hills, came to the scene upon hearing the news. He has about a dozen family and friends living in Monterey Park. He said, “This is [supposed to be] a happy time… I want to find out as much as possible. This is shocking.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, the incident occurred after 10 pm on Saturday. News agency AFP journalists who were on the scene reported a significant police presence, with certain areas sealed off and helicopters flying overhead. Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia tweeted, “Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city, Monterey Park…” The shooting occurred on the first day of a two-day Chinese New Year festival, which is one of the largest Lunar New Year events in Southern California.
