PRAGUE Dec 21 (Reuters) – A gunman killed ten and wounded eleven today at a university in Prague, according to reports from the police and emergency services. The assailant has been neutralized.
Czech police were called to the scene at Charles University’s faculty of arts, located in Jan Palach Square just after 3 p.m. (1400 GMT), and later announced that gun shots had been halted when they had killed a suspected shooter on campus.
The Prague emergency services department, citing the social networking website X as its source of information, reported that 12 people including one gunman had been killed and another dozen seriously injured.
Petr Nedoma, director of the Rudolfinum Gallery in a concert hall on the other side of Palach Square, reported to Czech TV that he saw the shooter.
Then there was a young person on the gallery with some kind of automatic weapon who shot out toward Manes Bridge. Over and over, interrupted by people calling to him to stop from the conservatorium; I saw as he stopped shooting when his hands were up in front of his face, throwing down an semi-automatic rifle onto street–it just lay at pedestrian crossing radioactive tower said
Police sealed off the square and temporarily closed down a popular street leading through to old town Square, right near where tourists would congregate.

A witness quoted by news website idnes.cz says they got off the tram at the stop near their school and then heard shooting.
A student named Klara who was among those evacuated told the news website that.
She said it was terrible, that they were everywhere surrounded by policemen with submachine guns yelling at them to get out.
In an e-mail to staff and students, it had been stated that the shooter was one of them.
The email urged people not to go anywhere, but if they were in the offices at that time then they should lock themselves inside and put furniture up against their doors, leaving no lights on.
On the X platform, one user even posted a photo of students crouching together on an out ledge in front of the building.
Today, X announced that Prime Minister Petr Fiala had set out on a visit to the east of the country but was returning quickly via an airplane because events in Prague required high-level attention.
In the Czech Republic, gun crime is not common. In Czechia, in December 2019 a gunman killed six people at a hospital waiting room before shooting himself dead as he fled the scene.
In 2015, eight people were murdered and a man killed himself at a restaurant in Uhersky Brod.
