In the last 24 months, there have been times of significant expansion. To keep pace with and support that expansion, we recruited employees based on a different economic situation than the one we are currently experiencing.
I am positive about the enormous potential that lies ahead of us, based on the power of our mission, the worth of our offerings, and our early investments in AI. To fully take advantage of it, we will have to make difficult decisions. Therefore, we have conducted a thorough examination across product lines and functions to ensure that our personnel and positions are aligned with our company’s top priorities. The positions that we are eliminating are a result of that examination. They span across Alphabet, product lines, functions, levels and regions.
To our valued colleagues who are departing: We express our sincere gratitude for your dedicated efforts in serving people and organizations worldwide. Your contributions have been immeasurable, and we are deeply appreciative of them.
Although this process will be challenging, we will provide support to our employees as they seek new opportunities.
In the United States:
- We will compensate employees for the entire notification period (a minimum of 60 days).
- We will also provide a severance package that begins at 16 weeks of salary, plus an additional two weeks for each additional year of service at Google, and accelerate at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting.
- We will pay 2022 bonuses and outstanding vacation time.
- We will offer 6 months of healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support for those impacted.
Outside of the United States, we will provide support to employees in accordance with local practices.
As a company that is approaching its 25th year, it is inevitable that we will experience challenging economic cycles. These are crucial times for us to sharpen our focus, streamline our costs, and redirect our talent and resources towards our most important priorities.
Limiting ourselves in certain areas enables us to make significant investments in others. Our decision to prioritize AI several years ago has led to groundbreaking advancements across our business and the broader industry.
Due to those early investments, Google’s products are better than ever before. Additionally, we are preparing to unveil new experiences for users, developers and businesses. We have a significant opportunity in front of us with AI across our products, and we are ready to tackle it with confidence and responsibility.
All of this work is an extension of the “healthy disregard for the impossible” mentality that has been at the heart of our culture from the beginning. When I look around Google today, I see that same spirit and energy driving our efforts. This is why I remain hopeful about our ability to achieve our mission, even during our most difficult days. Today is definitely one of them.
I understand that you may have many questions about how we will proceed. We will be holding a town hall meeting on Monday, please check your calendar for more information. In the meantime, please take care of yourselves as you process this difficult news. Additionally, if you have just started your workday, feel free to work from home today.
