Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni said that there is an “incompatibility problem” between Islamic culture and European civilization’s values and rights. This provocative statement was made at an event organized by her right-wing, ultra-conservative Brothers of Italy party which brought together the likes of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and billionaire Elon Musk.
Meloni focused on the problem of whether some understandings of Islamic culture can fit into the rights and values associated with European civilization. She also slammed the fact that many of Italy’s Islamic cultural centers are funded by Saudi Arabia, whose Sharia law criminalizes everything from apostasy to homosexuality. Sharia law is a system of laws based on the Quran and the Hadith, sacred texts of Islam.
She also says that sharia includes punishments such as stoning for adultery, the death penalty for apostasy and homosexuality. These must be faced without smearing all of Islam in generalization. The fact is there’s a need to look at what kind of threat Europe faces from powerful Islamic forces which often contradict with our civilization on values issue.”

When Sunak visited Rome, he backed Meloni’s stance on migration. Sunak’s risky plan to send asylum seekers off to Rwanda has been opposed in the courts and denounced as cruel. In the meantime, however, Meloni has faced criticism for her attempts to rein in charity rescue ships operating on the Mediterranean Sea.
He said, “If we don’t deal with this question the numbers will just grow. It could end up consuming us and even our people ‘welfare abilities to do good deeds for those who unreservedly need help from others.” Proposing something different means departing from the consensus.
Neither Giorgia nor myself is afraid to do so if only we can create a credible deterrent that will work today and into tomorrow, unto eternity –a resolution free of contradiction or compromise capable of establishing peace even in uncertain times.
